Resolution possible in Parliament's special session to drop 'India' from the statute and go with Bharat alone
THE Centre appears to be preparing the ground to drop the colonial name of the country, 'India', and going with Bharat instead. A resolution to this effect could possibly be discussed in the special session of Parliament that is scheduled to be held from September 18 to 22.
The resolution is expected to seek the sense of the House on the proposal. Article 1(1) of the Constitution states that "India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States." The Centre does not want to flip it to say 'Bharat, that is India', but to drop the colonial name across the Constitution, a well informed functionary of the BJP said.
