MP's papers rejected, NDA gains advantage

THE BJP-led NDA's poll prospects in Assam's Scheduled Tribe-reserved Kokrajhar seat have suddenly brightened after the Returning Officer (RO) rejected the nomination papers of two-time sitting MP Naba Kumar Sarania following scrutiny.
Recently, Sarania, who is a former leader of insurgent group United Liberation Front of Assam, had filed a writ petition in the Gauhati High Court challenging the striking down of his ST (Plains) status by the state-level scrutiny committee.
The court, however, dismissed his petition on Thursday.
Returning Officer Pradeep Kumar Dwivedi told the media on Sunday that 16 candidates had filed their nomination papers and the nomination of Sarania was found to be defective.
