Alleged of intruding on House functions: SC

The Morning Standard

April 22, 2025

"AS it is, we are alleged of encroaching upon parliamentary and executive functions," a Supreme Court bench led by Justice B R Gavai said on Monday, in an apparent reference to recent adverse remarks on the function of judiciary.

- SUCHITRA KALYAN MOHANTY @ New Delhi

Justice Gavai's observations came while hearing a plea over the incidents of violence in West Bengal over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, when a lawyer mentioned a plea seeking directions for deployment of paramilitary forces in Bengal in the light of the communal violence that broke out in Murshidabad district.

The top court will hear on Tuesday a plea seeking directions for deployment of paramilitary forces in Bengal.

However, the court on Monday did not say anything on the listing and hearing on the plea mentioned by the lawyer Vishnu Shankar Jain, appearing for the petitioner—West Bengal resident Devdutta Majid—as the plea is slated to be heard by the court on Tuesday.
