The Spy Who Came in from the Cold Soho Place
John le Carré's novel of cold-blooded Cold War espionage gets a propulsive, reassuringly old-fashioned staging from writer David Eldridge and director Jeremy Herrin. Anchored by Rory Keenan's harried performance as alcoholic spy-runner Alec Leamas, cajoled into one last job after his best agent is murdered in Berlin, it's full of men striding around in overcoats and pouring angry drinks in shabby postwar rooms.

Ramsay's top dog conquers Le Gavroche
Food is the great stirrer of memory. Madeleines for Proust, toad in the hole for me. It follows that restaurants are vehicles of a kind, both Concordes and DeLoreans: they take us across the world, but also through time. Pubs summoning the splendour of the Victorians; wine bars that recall Paris in the 1950s; brasseries with a touch of 1960s cool. Rarely, though, are the early-2000s exhumed, as in Bonheur. “Ah, the great mediocrity of the Noughties,” I didn’t think. “Thank God someone’s brought it back.”

The controversial genetic science that's busting the myths of Hitler's bunker
Did Richard III actually have a hunchback? Was Hitler really Jewish? For years, these ideas have persisted. Now, thanks to the work of geneticist Professor Turi King, Director of the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath, we know that both are tall tales.

Justice delayed is justice denied, which is why we're cutting back jury trials
The grim reality of the justice system means victims of serious violent or sexual crimes in London today could wait years for their day in court. London has the biggest backlog in England and Wales, with some cases in Croydon Crown Court listed as far ahead as 2029. And it is not an abstract failure. It is a human tragedy unravelling in slow motion, day after day, case after case.
