There's a big controversy about Tayyabs versus Needoo restaurants - I want to shout them both out and broker a peace treaty

Home is...

Northwest London.

Where was your first flat in London?

I grew up in Wembley, but my first flat was in Old Kent Road.

What was your first job?

I worked at the Foot Locker, but before that, I worked in a dodgy telemarketing centre that got teenagers in for below minimum wage to try and get old people to accept this “holiday” they just “won”. We were stoned for most of it.

Which shops do you rely on?

Daunt Books. My wife's a novelist, so she can’t walk past the bookshop without going in. Then two cafés: Shreeji Newsagents, opposite Chiltern Firehouse, and Foreign Exchange News in Bayswater, because Bayswater is where all the money used to be changed.

Best meal you've had in London?

I really like Southeast Asian food. So, Champor-Champor in London Bridge; there's an amazing coconut monkfish curry situation. I know there's a big controversy about Tayyabs versus Needoo, but I refuse to choose. I want to shout them both out and broker a peace treaty. Big Asma Khan fan as well; whenever I'm showing people around London I take them to Darjeeling Express. And Park Chinois — I know it’s posh, but it’s a halal Chinese, it’s like a really posh version of a takeaway.

At the table Fancy a five-hour queue for a pizza the action?

Only you know whether pizza is worth queuing five hours for, whether it is worth sleepless nights sitting in the torpid blue light of a smartphone screen searching in vain for a reservation that will never materialise. This is how it is with the Marlborough.
