University leads transformation of neglected hall

A HISTORIC meeting hall in Newcastle city centre is being transformed into a state-of-the-art teaching space after years of decline.

Durant Hall, part of the art deco Unitarian Church of the Divine Unity on Ellison Place, is being renovated by Northumbria University.

The grade II listed hall, which dates back to the 1930s, will be brought back to life as lecture theatres and other teaching areas.

Northumbria University purchased the striking building from the church in 2023 and contractors have since been refurbishing its roofs, many of which were suffering from dry and wet rot.

Work has commenced this week to refurbish the interior of Durant Hall, which was originally designed by architects Cackett, Burns Dick and Mackellar, who also created the former police station, courts and fire station on Pilgrim Street.
