United are facing a tough decision over a move for Delap
The Journal
|May 01, 2025
NEWCASTLE United will have to make Liam Delap one of their top earners if they are to win the race for the Ipswich Town frontman's signature.
As things stand, Delap's representatives are preparing for his summer exit from Portman Road with a £30million release clause expected to be triggered in the weeks to come.
From that £30m, Ipswich will have to pay Manchester City 20% of the proceeds due to a sell on clause.
Delap's release clause dropped from £40m to £30m in the aftermath of relegation for the Tractor Boys after their return to the Championship was confirmed at St James' Park on Saturday after their 3-0 defeat. His performance was carefully assessed in the stands by sporting director Paul Mitchell.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur are all thought to be keen on Delap this summer while City also have a buy back clause.
But with Delap expected to ask for wages between £120,000 to £150,000 per week in any talks with rivals, Newcastle would have to think long and hard about making the 22-year-old one of their top earners.
