NEWCASTLE United have only three games to negotiate before they can celebrate a return to Champions League football next season.

- By STUART JAMIESON

Eddie Howe's squad have put themselves in the driving seat when it comes to securing a top-five Premier League spot, and can take a big step towards their goals by beating Chelsea at St James’ Park on Sunday.

United picked up a valuable point at Brighton last weekend, but saw Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier limp off before the end. Howe will want as strong a squad as possible for the final three games, and is already without several players for the rest of the season.

The Magpies’ lack of strength in depth in key positions is something they will look to address in the summer transfer window, but for now, Howe can ill afford any injury problems. Here is the latest situation as they prepare for Chelsea.

FABIAN SCHAR

Injury: Cramp/muscle strain

Newcastle’s experienced defender was forced off before the end at Brighton, with Sven Botman replacing him. Fears of a muscle injury were downplayed, with cramp a more likely explanation.

A full week’s recovery should mean he will be in the squad to face Chelsea, with Botman on standby to step in

What has been said: “I am not 100% sure with Fabby as he was limping.
