Swan's final ship makes a return to the Tyne at last

THE last ship to be built at the Swan Hunter shipyard has made its way back to the Tyne for work.

The Royal Fleet Auxillary (RFA) Lyme Bay became the last vessel in the landmark Tyneside yard before the Ministry of Defence took the contract away from the company over management and cost concerns, and towed it to Glasgow to be finished.

Now the landing ship is back on the Tyne, this time at repair specialist A&P's drydock in Hebburn, where it is undergoing work. A&P workers will carry out an overhaul of its diesel generators, refurbishment of its Galley deck, improvements and upgrades to the ship's HVAC system and machinery and equipment annual testing and certification.
