Surgeon hoping to improve care for those at risk of amputations

NEWCASTLE hospital surgeon is leading a first-of-its-kind study that could improve care for a condition that can lead to amputations or even death.

Consultant Sandip Nandhra - who is also a senior clinical fellow at Newcastle University - is an expert in a condition called acute limb ischaemia (ALI).

This is when a blood clot blocks blood supply to the legs. It’s an emergency condition and causes nerves, muscles and skin to die within hours - this can lead to amputation or death.

To unblock the artery, urgent surgery is needed. This can be done through either keyhole or open surgery - and Mr Nandhra is now leading a study to consider which procedure leads to better outcomes.
