New hospital facilities“mean the world” to a Whickham mum whose daughter has to go every few months.

Little Lexie, 7, has hypothyroidism and requires regular checkups.Mum Alice Marston told The Journal how a new children’s and young people's department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital was a godsend.

The new department opened officially last week, along with the new Northern Gynaecological Cancer Centre. This comes after a £7.4m investment from the Gateshead Health NHS Trust which runs at the hospital.

Alice - a social worker - said the new facilities had already made a huge difference to her family. She said: "She goes to get her bloods taken for her thyroid checkup every three months... just to make sure that her medication is right.
