New club crest aimed at helping Magpies become a 'global brand'
The Journal
|May 10, 2025
NEWCASTLE United's decision to change the club’s iconic crest will split opinion across a passionate fanbase but, in truth, the move should not come as a total surprise.
The Magpies have confirmed that Season Ticket holders and members will be surveyed, until May 16, for their take on what should be included, done away with and considered as the club move forward with this decision.
The reason for the change, according to Newcastle, is due to the fact the crest was created ‘in a different era’ and ‘is difficult to reproduce’ in today’s digital world.
The complex design of old is clearly not making financial sense as the club turbocharge their merchandise offerings and become a more recognised vehicle around the world.
A top English club changing their historic logo is nothing new. Arsenal made their switch in 2002, Chelsea in 2005, Tottenham Hotspur in 2006, Everton in 2014, Manchester City and West Ham United in 2016 and Brentford in 2017. Aston Villa became the latest to make the move last year.
Some clubs have decided to move to simpler designs, which can be recognised instantly around the world.
