NEWCASTLE
celebrates his goal
United left it late against Fulham to venture to the Carabao Cup semifinals with an injury-time winner form Lewis Miley - but make no mistake this was far from pretty. At times it looked like the Magpies were struggling with a Wear-Tyne derby hangover as they failed to break the Cottagers down and even looked like they could blow it as Fulham grew in confidence.
This win had Eddie Howe jumping for joy on the back of the 1-0 loss on Wearside though.
But it also proved a costly night as Tino Livramento limped off with a knee injury and went straight down the tunnel to leave Newcastle in a real defensive crisis.
Howe had gone into the game on the back of some stinging criticism from social media accounts, but the Gallowgate End made their point in the opening seconds with a hearty rendition of 'Eddie Howe's black and white army'.
But Newcastle made a sluggish start to the game and as the rain lashed down it was Fulham who forced a succession of corners without managing to convert a clear-cut chance.
But Newcastle grabbed the lead on 10 minutes for a well-crafted opener at the Leazes End. It was a sumptuous pass from Fabian Schar, who angled a ball from left to right to find Jacob Murphy.
