Key member of greyhound team wins top award

Shannon Brown at the Newcastle Greyhound Stadium with her dad Paul Rutherford and colleagues

Since leaving school, Shannon Brown has been dedicated to racing, as well as finding retired dogs their “forever homes”.

Shannon, from Morpeth, has been named as the Greyhound Board of Great Britain’s Kennelhand of the Year, in recognition of her contribution to licensed greyhound racing, and her love for the breed.

She has worked full-time for her dad Paul Rutherford since just after the pandemic, and is an integral part of a team that cares for up to 40 racing greyhounds that are linked to the stadium in Newcastle.

Shannon is responsible for each greyhound’s comprehensive daily routine, which includes grooming, nail clipping, teeth cleaning, exercise, play, and their racing duties.
