'I watched shy Trai emerge as a real leader'

The 34-year, part of the Oldham Athletic side promoted from the National League last season, has backed his fellow countryman Trai Hume to do the same and stay in England for many a season, praising his character and ever-growing presence.

Evans made a big impact in the game, primarily at Blackburn Rovers where he made more than 200 appearances between 2013 and 2021 before joining the Black Cats.

He has seen first-hand evidence while watching Hume develop at the Academy of Light from promising youngster to charismatic leader.

The young defender was part of a squad that saw Evans lead to promotion via the League One Play-Offs in 2022.
