Hundreds of residents against housing plans

MORE than 400 residents have signed a petition opposing a new housing development on a prominent site overlooking a Northumberland town.

Hundreds of residents against housing plans

Barratt and David Wilson Homes have announced plans to build 65 new homes on land off Highfield Lane in Prudhoe.

However, the proposals have drawn concerns from locals given the site’s proximity to three schools. The developers insist traffic concerns have been taken into account as the scheme has developed.

The petition outlines four key reasons for objection: highways safety; environmental and conservation impact; historic planning refusals for the same site; and a housing land assessment which classed the site as unsuitable.

Residents are calling for Northumberland County Council's planning department to convene a public meeting in order to ensure local views are heard. A community spokesman said: “This development has generated deep concern among residents. From traffic safety to environmental impact and the site's own planning history, the message is clear - this proposal is not suitable for Prudhoe.”
