Hundreds object to plan for homes near stadium
The Journal
|September 13, 2025
HUNDREDS of people have objected to plans to build 600 new homes near Sunderland's Stadium of Light.
The proposals have caused a rift between Sunderland City Council and the city's football club, with the club arguing that proposals to develop the Sheepfolds area threaten potential future expansion of the stadium and could jeopardise match-day safety.
The club has said it could consider taking a judicial review about the proposals.
Plans have been submitted to demolish 38 industrial units in the shadow of the ground to make way for up to 600 homes and associated infrastructure work.
The council recently appointed Vistry Group as preferred developer for the Sheepfolds neighbourhood.
