YOUNG teens aged 14 to 16 in the UK wanting to get ripped is becoming more common.

Social media, sports clubs and friendship groups all promote the idea that a lean, muscular body equals confidence.

That motivation can be positive, but it is important to understand why teens chase that look, what the real benefits are - and the risks.

Why do teens want to get ripped?

There are several reasons. Some want to improve their appearance for social media or at school. Others are looking for that extra edge in sport or a boost in confidence and self esteem. For many this is also a way to feel in control and to channel energy into something measurable.
