IPL 2025: Qualification Scenarios
The Island
|May 06, 2025
After the end of the 54th match in the ongoing@L1$, the two teams, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, have been eliminated. With 16 more matches to be played in the round-robin league stage, eight teams are still hunting for a place in the playoffs. Here's a look at how the teams are placed currently, and the possible qualification scenarios:
-
Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Remaining fixtures: vs LSG (Away), vs SRH (Home), vs KKR (Home)
Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with 16 points, are at the top of the points table. Ideally, in most seasons, these many points would have been enough to confirm a playoff berth, but in the current scenario, there could be more than four teams finishing with 16 points.
For RCB to qualify without concern, they must win two of their remaining three matches. And if they win all of their remaining games, they are guaranteed to finish in the top two spots. They have all their remaining games against the bottom-placed teams and two of the three matches at their home venue in Bengaluru, where they won the last two games, including a thrilling one against CSK last Saturday. Even if they lose all their remaining games, they can still qualify for the playoffs if other results go their way. There will be an extreme situation where more than four teams can finish above 16 points and RCB loses all their games. In this case, NRR will decide the fate of the RCB playoff berth.
Punjab Kings
Remaining fixtures: vs DC (Home), vs MI (Home), vs RR (Away)
Punjab Kings' latest win over LSG in Dharamsala took them into the top four again. For the first time since 2014, they have reached 15 points in the league stage. With three games to go for them, they need to win two of those to confirm qualification. One win with a strong net run rate can also be enough for them to qualify. As they have two games at home, against DC and MI, if they beat Mumbai Indians, they could have a strong chance to finish in the top two. If PBKS win only one of their remaining three matches, they will finish on 17 points. They will still qualify but will have to depend on other results. If they lose all three games, there will be a strong chance that PBKS could miss the qualification, as 16 points could be the cut-off this season.
