Many people experience those nagging doubts that what you do isn’t enough or that your colleagues are far better. These thoughts can be painful but they also offer the chance to change, learn and grow.

First you must remember that competence at work does not spring full-blown overnight. Everyone starts somewhere. Mistakes are part of the job. They teach what works and what does not. If you are new to a role or to certain tasks you will make errors. That is normal. What matters more is how you treat those errors. Viewing them as lessons rather than failures changes the way you see yourself.

You may begin by reflecting on what you have already done well. Looking back over past successes restores perspective. Even small wins count. Perhaps you handled a difficult conversation, completed a demanding project, or managed to learn a new tool. If you forget these moments you may only remember the times you stumbled. Keep a record of what went well so when doubt comes knocking you can remind yourself of what you are able to do.
