Dropped catch leaves Sri Lanka ruing missed chance
The Island
|October 13, 2025
Sri Lanka's women's team has made significant strides in the last two years, claiming notable wins against top sides. Yet, as their World Cup campaign has shown, they remain very much a work in progress, a side learning to polish the rough edges that separate promise from consistency.
Colombo, one of four host cities alongside three in India, saw Sri Lanka once again undone by poor fielding when they met England on Saturday. In the curtain-raiser against India, four dropped catches had cost them dearly, and the story repeated itself at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, dropped on just three at short mid-wicket, made Sri Lanka pay the heaviest of prices, a run a ball century that became the backbone of England's 89 run victory.
After the match, skipper Chamari Athapaththu admitted the team's catching woes continued to haunt them.
