Asda baker hits incredible five million pancake milestone

- ROSS DUNN

Kilmarnock has become synonymous with pies in recent years but that could be about to flip for another food...

Asda has revealed that their Kilmarnock store sells the most pancakes out of all of their Scottish stores.

The top five Scottish stores - which includes Ayr in third - sell an average of 3,000 pancakes weekly from the retailer's instore bakery, placing Scotland firmly at the top of the pancake pile.

And one man reckons he must've flipped 5 million pancakes in the almost 25 years he's worked for the supermarket.

James 'Jim' Smith has spent a quarter of a century at the hot plate - eight of those at the Queen's Drive store.

While the 71-year-old originally dreamed of becoming a chef, limited local opportunities and a mum who didn't want him straying too far from home, saw him begin his career as an apprentice in a local family-run bakery instead.

That apprenticeship set the foundations for a lifelong career.
