Airports and RAF bases are 'forever chemical' hotspots

RAF bases, airports and fire stations are among the biggest hotspots of “forever chemical” pollution, an Environment Agency report has revealed.

Linked to serious health issues, these toxic substances are commonplace in the UK, and virtually indestructible.

Technically called PFAS or PFOS (per- or poly-fluoroalkyl substances), forever chemicals are a family of more than 10,000 human-made substances. They are only manufactured by a relatively small number of companies, but are widely used in everyday products and processes.

Forever chemicals can be found in non-stick pans, pizza boxes, cosmetics, waterproof fabric, greaseproof paper, and certain carpets and flooring, and are used for their resistant properties.

Slot banks on luck turning for his misfiring champions

Even as Liverpool are in a slump of staggering proportions, Arne Slot has one fewer critic. In his own family, anyway. In March, as Liverpool cruised towards the Premier League title, the Dutchman revealed his father had found fault with their performances. In tougher times, however, Arend Slot has become more sympathetic. A former coach of VV Bergentheim, an amateur team in the Netherlands, he has some insight into the job and its demands. Now, however, parental duties have taken over.
