A NEW storm which is expected to bring winds of up to 70mph to the South West from Thursday afternoon has prompted the Met Office to issue a 'danger to life' warning.

- By HERALD REPORTERS

Storm Goretti is expected to bring strong winds to the region from 3pm Thursday, with a new yellow weather warning lasting until 6am Friday morning.

Plymouth is among a wide area expected to be affected, from Cornwall to Somerset and across to Christchurch in Dorset, as well as the Isles of Scilly.

The warning has been upgraded to amber in the most southerly section of Cornwall, with a 'danger to life' warning from flying debris during the 15-hour period.

Several yellow weather warnings have been in place already since the New Year, and Plymouth has been affected by plummeting temperatures which has led to the closure of a number of roads.

Yesterday, several roads were again closed due to ice, which made them especially treacherous during the early morning.

Valley View Road, in Eggbuckland, was closed in both directions due to ice, from The Retreat to Windsor Road, while Reddington Road was also closed in both directions between Hollycroft Road and Eggbuckland Road.

Holmwood Avenue was closed in both directions due to ice between Goosewell Road and Holcombe Drive, while Donnington Drive was closed in both directions due to ice from Eggbuckland Road to Hawthorn Way.
