Station at Plympton remains possibility

ASPIRATIONS remain high that Plympton railway station could eventually reopen, nearly 60 years after its closure.
Plympton railway station opened in 1848 but, after more than 100 years of trains stopping, it was one of the many stations across the UK that were shut down in the early 1960s.
Today, there is nothing left of the actual station that gave its name to Station Road. While trains still rattle through the area on their way in and out of Plymouth, no passengers have alighted from a train since its closure to passengers in 1959. It handled goods traffic until 1964.
In early 2017, Plymouth City Council commissioned a feasibility study to assess the demand for a new station at Plympton as part of the Plymouth and South West Devon Joint Local Plan.
While the current priority of the city's politicians and railway activists is the reopening of the Drake Line to Tavistock, a Plympton station remains high on the agenda, although it is unlikely to reopen any time soon.
