Protecting civilian population at times of danger

BEFORE the Second World War, British people feared that any future conflict would involve the heavy aerial bombing of civilian areas.

In December 1937, the Government passed the Air Raid Precautions Act. This meant local authorities had to ready themselves in case of an air attack.

One of the most visible forms of 'ARP' were air raid wardens - the first link in the chain of Britain's civil defence system.
