Plan for new railway station for Plympton
The Herald
|February 17, 2026
THE £100m revamp of Plymouth's main railway station is set to go back to the drawing board - but plans are emerging for a new terminal at Plympton.
Redevelopment of the North Road East site is to be looked at afresh, with Plymouth City Council saying it will review the scheme and bring out a new business plan later this year.
The site was due to be turned into an attractive gateway to the city called Brunel Plaza, with a new multi-storey car park, a hotel, more than 100 new homes and another University of Plymouth building to sit near the already revamped Intercity Place medical campus tower.
But in 2024 the council said the plan faced years of delay, there were questions about how it was going to be paid for, and a key planning consent expired.
However, since then, the council has announced a vision to build 10,000 new homes in the city centre, and GWR last month said it has leased the huge former Royal Mail sorting office, at Pennycomequick, and would move its staff out of the Rail Incident Safety Centre (RISC) building, next to Intercity Place, which is earmarked for demolition.
