ON the 5th of May 2025 we, quite rightly, celebrated 80 years to the day when the lights were turned back on in the United Kingdom, writes Malcolm Bassett-Smith.
No more doodle bug attacks, no more getting into the Anderson Shelter at night, no more carrying respirators to go shopping...
But for upwards of 400,000 British servicemen, supported by the best part of a million Commonwealth troops, the war was far from over.
If you were not fighting on the sea, in the skies, or in the jungles there was always the battle with malaria and other tropical diseases or worse still the horrific and inhumane treatment handed out to POWs at the hands of the Imperial Japanese Army.
