Argyle's woeful loss met with loud boos and angry chants from Green Army

THE anger and frustration of the Green Army spilled out from the stands as Plymouth Argyle crashed to a 3-0 defeat by Northampton Town at Home Park on Saturday.

- By CHRIS ERRINGTON

There were furious chants from sections of the supporters aimed at head coach Tom Cleverley and his players, as well as Simon Hallett and his board of directors, during the game and especially after the final whistle.

It was an 11th League One defeat out of 17 games this term for the Pilgrims, leaving them in 23rd position, and to make matters even worse their nine-goal top scorer Lorent Tolaj received a straight red card in the second half after an off-the-ball incident.

The hopes that a vital 1-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table rivals Port Vale the previous Saturday would give Argyle a much-needed boost did not materialise and they now appear to be facing a long, hard winter and a fight against relegation.

After a goalless first half, Northampton stepped up the tempo after the interval and took the lead with a looping header from striker Tom Eaves shortly before the hour mark.

Tolaj was then sent-off after a clash with Town's Jack Burroughs and the Pilgrims' only real goalscoring threat, will have to serve a three-match suspension in the league as a result.
