Organiser of Pride march in Hungary could face prosecution

December 11, 2025

A rights campaigner in Hungary has been placed under investigation and faces potential criminal charges after organising a Pride march, in a case campaigners have called “unprecedented and dangerous” for the EU.

- Ashifa Kassam

In early October, 8,000 people flocked to the southern city of Pécs, defying a ban on Pride events voted in by Viktor Orban and his rightwing party in March, a move Amnesty International called a “full-frontal attack” on LGBTQ+ people. In June, tens of thousands marched in Budapest after Pride was rebranded a municipal cultural event.
