John Stapleton, host of Watchdog and GMTV, dies aged 79

Leading television presenters paid tribute yesterday to the broadcaster John Stapleton, who has died at the age of 79.

Kate Garraway, his former GMTV colleague, said she was “absolutely devastated to hear of the passing of my dear friend and journalistic hero”, describing him a “rock solid broadcaster and the ultimate gentleman”.

Charlotte Hawkins and Susanna Reid, fellow presenters of Good Morning Britain, also paid tribute.

Reid described Stapleton as a “legend” and “consummate pro” who was “always good-humoured and gracious to work with”. Hawkins said he was a “brilliant broadcaster” and a “genuinely lovely man”.
