Day to Celebrate' as Data Shows Majority of Doctors Are Women

The Guardian

Female doctors in the UK now outnumber their male counterparts and there are more medics from minority ethnic backgrounds than from white ones, figures show.

- Denis Campbell

Both major changes in the make-up of Britain's almost 330,000-strong medical workforce are outlined today in an analysis by the regulator the General Medical Council (GMC).

That the number of women practising medicine has surpassed the number of men has been hailed as "a milestone". The shift should make it easier for women to see and be treated by a doctor of their own sex.

GMC figures show that on 28 February 164,440 female doctors were licensed to practise medicine across the four home nations, 245 more than the 164,195 male medics on its register. That means women make up a slight majority - 50.04% - of the country's doctors and men 49.96%.
