BBC 'plans remote coverage of some World Cup matches'

The BBC has faced denunciations over the large number of staff it takes to major events from Glastonbury festival to the Olympics.

However, the broadcaster is now facing criticism over a plan that would result in some games at next summer's Fifa World Cup being covered remotely to keep down costs.

A sprawling tournament across three countries, different time zones and an expanded 48-team tournament mean the BBC is considering having TV commentators and pundits to cover some games from its base in Salford, Greater Manchester.

It comes with the corporation battling to keep a handle on the costs of covering the biggest ever World Cup programme.

The plan is the latest attempt by the BBC to adapt to falling licence fee income, which has declined by about a third since 2010. The costs associated with having commentary teams in a stadium along with accommodation and flight expenses are said to be significant.

It is understood that the broadcaster will have commentators and pundits in place for major games, including all of those played by the home nations.
