Trump's legal woes mount as 2024 race hots up
The Guardian Weekly
|March 24, 2023
As Donald Trump runs again for the White House, he's dogged by four criminal investigations, shortening the odds that he will face charges, say former federal prosecutors.
Two investigations are homing in on Trump's nonstop efforts to thwart his 2020 election loss with bogus fraud charges. The others are looking into Trump's retention of hundreds of classified documents after his presidency, and his role in a $130,000 hush money payment in 2016 to the porn star Stormy Daniels, with whom he allegedly had an affair. An indictment of Trump in the Daniels case was expected this week.
The four inquiries have been examining separately whether Trump violated laws including obstruction of an official proceeding and defrauding the US by his actions to attempting to overturn the 2020 election. The investigations, two led by the justice department's special counsel Jack Smith, are unparalleled for an expresident, say former prosecutors.
