BUSINESSES REACT AS STOCKTON COUNCIL DROPS ITS PROPOSALS TO MOVE TRADERS OUT OF THE SHAMBLES
PLANS to move businesses in The Shambles market hall in Stockton town centre have been dropped.
The proposals to market The Shambles as a food and drink venue, and relocate its current businesses, sparked worry and concern among traders in July. It led to dramatic scenes at a meeting of Stockton Council’s cabinet where leaders were heckled by frustrated businesspeople from the 19th century shopping centre.
Traders had described the proposals, which would have “required vacant possession” as part of regeneration plans to fit with the forthcoming Stockton Waterfront urban park, as “heartbreaking”.
They said they felt “stuck in limbo’, uncertain and worried they might not be able to afford to move elsewhere and might have to shut down.
Cllr Lisa Evans announced on social media on Wednesday: “We've been engaging with the businesses in The Shambles since July and have listened to their views and concerns.
“Small businesses have a really important role to play in the future of our town centres, and we are committed to ensuring they have the best environment to grow and prosper.
“We have ambitious plans to support our small businesses and that’s why at cabinet next week we'll consider plans to support these types of businesses, creating bespoke spaces at the heart of the town centre, where we know there is highest footfall. There is strong interest from small traders looking for affordable space.
“We know this offer will be popular and so we hope this will further support our local independent retailers and fledgling businesses.
