PLANNING committee members have signed off on a new 3G sports pitch facility in Marske, despite some concern over the impact on nearby properties.

A disused hardstanding area largely used for informal parking associated with the Marske Sports and Recreation Association club in Mount Pleasant Avenue will be turned into a 600 square metre sized 'Playzone', a synthetic pitch complete with fencing and floodlighting.

The scheme is one of several similar ones in the borough being majority funded by the Football Foundation, a charity funded by the Premier League, Football Association and UK Government which aims to provide safe and comfortable spaces for people to play sports, primarily football.

Redcar and Cleveland Council in its contribution to a consultation over the application said: "The development of a Playzone at Marske will provide additional capacity to increase participation in physical activity, bringing the current disused area back into life for the local community to be active. The facility will also offer a wide range of opportunities to those who are currently inactive.
