WELL party conference season is passing me by, mostly because I don't go to any of them.

I made a decision many years ago that unless I could go to all of them I shouldn't really go to any. I have been to them in the past but it has been when there has been some very specific issue for me to be there. Being politically neutral and not linked to a party does have some advantages. So, what it means in practice, is that we are now away from Westminster for three weeks. It is quite off-putting coming back for two weeks, getting in to the pattern of work and then going away again.
