SLASHER CLASSIC I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER IS BACK. RACHAEL DAVIS CHATS TO THE CAST ABOUT THE FRANCHISE'S LASTING APPEAL
-
HARDCORE horror fans will remember the gory thrills of 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, a hit slasher film starring Nineties favourites Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr.
It launched a hit franchise, but fans haven't had a new instalment since 2006's I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.
Now, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the director behind teen black comedy Do Revenge, has taken the reins to deliver another helping of gory thrills.
Also titled I Know What You Did Last Summer, her movie is not a remake of the original. Instead, the plot picks back up in Southport, North Carolina 27 years after the Tower Bay murders.
Another hook-wielding killer appears and, inspired by the legendary serial murderer, begins to target a group of twenty-something friends with a dark past.
"The original was the first R-rated movie (a film inappropriate for children under the age of 17 without being accompanied by an adult) I ever snuck into," says the 37-year-old filmmaker.
"My babysitter wanted to see it, and I ended up going with her. My mom got really angry, but I didn’t care because I was so mesmerised by it. So, when I was approached about directing a new version, it was an immediate yes - truly a no-brainer.
"This movie is about people making a mistake, then making the wrong choice, and the consequences that follow. It’s a deeply human story."
The story starts as Ava, played by Bodies Bodies Bodies star Chase Sui Wonders, returns to Southport for the engagement party of Danica (Madelyn Cline) and Teddy (Tyriq Withers).
