ONE of the most breathtaking sights any nature lover can ever experience is the sight of a male hen harrier in the air.
-
These elegant raptors have eye-catching slate grey bodies with white underparts, while the wing tips are black.
Facially they have an "owl-like" appearance.
Hen harriers are one of the rarest breeding birds in Britain, so Paul Welsh was fortunate to take this fabulous photo of the male bird visiting our Cleveland region.
I was lucky enough to see one ten years ago just outside our area at Hurworth Burn, which is a few miles north of Thorpe Thewles on the Castle Eden Walkway.
We would hope to see more of these fabulous birds, but unfortunately they are persecuted and illegally killed.
