Time to redraw geohazard maps

One reason why many were caught off-guard by the wrath of Super Typhoon Tino a few days ago was that they didn't expect their areas to be affected at all, or at least not hit that hard.

Many subdivisions and gated communities didn’t expect to be flooded but got swamped. Many people who lived in areas not previously inundated got a rude and very wet wakeup call.

In Barangay Biasong, Talisay City, an entire community living beside a river was washed away, resulting in several casualties. In Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City, two died after a house was buried in a landslide caused by Tino's rains.

The places many thought were safe before may not be so safe anymore, and now it may be time to redraw our geohazard maps.
