The worst possible time

Without minimizing the tragedy that it is --we are talking about 27 people now confirmed dead with nine still missing-- the trash landslide at the Binaliw landfill couldn't have come at a worst time; the city is hosting what can be considered its biggest crowd-drawers and social events.

We are talking about the Fiesta Señor and the Sinulog celebrations. One is religious in nature, the other is festive. Both draw huge crowds into the city from other parts of the country and even other parts of the world, huge crowds that have to dispose of their trash like food wrappers, water bottles, plastic bags, and the like.

Because local tourism is at its height these days, we can also expect establishments like hotels, restaurants, and malls to produce even more garbage than usual.
