DOTr vows to fast track key transport projects in Cebu

Department of Transport (DOTr) secretary Giovanni Z. Lopez commits to accelerate long-delayed, multibillion-peso transport projects in Cebu, signaling a renewed push to unlock growth in one of the country's fastest-expanding regional hubs as business groups press for better connectivity.

Speaking at the “Usapang Budget Natin” forum held yesterday at DepEd Ecotech center, Lopez said the DOTr would prioritize mass transit, port modernization and active transport initiatives, framing mobility as central to sustaining Cebu’s expansion outside Metro Manila.

A centerpiece of the pipeline is the P28.7-billion Cebu Bus Rapid Transit system, with Phase 1 funded by the World Bank and targeted to begin operations this year. The initial corridor is expected to carry about 34,000 passengers daily, easing congestion along key routes linking downtown Cebu City to neighboring districts.

The BRT, years in development, is widely viewed as a test case for modern bus-based transit outside the capital.
