Council renews call for accountability in Binaliw trash slide

The Cebu City Council has renewed its call for accountability over the deadly trash slide at the Binaliw landfill amid Mayor Nestor Archival's inaction while waiting for the official report from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The tragedy, which killed 36 workers and injured more than a dozen others, remains unresolved nearly three months later. The landfill, previously operated by ARN Central Waste Management, was taken over in 2023 by Prime Integrated Waste Solutions Inc. (PWSI), a point emphasized by Councilor Pastor "Jun" Alcover in a privilege speech.

The DENR earlier ordered the closure of the facility and launched an investigation into the causes of the collapse and possible liabilities. However, the absence of a final report has left both city officials and the public seeking clarity.

Alcover called for transparency on the condition of the victims, compensation for their families, and the role of PWSI in addressing the aftermath.
