Congress urged to pass law requiring real identity verification on social media

Former Supreme Court (SC) Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio on Sunday called on the next Congress to pass a “stand-alone law” mandating social media platforms to verify and secure the real identities of their users, in a bid to curb illegal activities and the posting of libelous content online.

In an interview on Headstart, Carpio recounted that during the deliberations on the SIM Card Registration Bill, he had proposed requiring all internet platforms to collect and verify the real identities of users. However, this recommendation was reportedly vetoed by then-President Rodrigo Duterte.
