Archival denies favoring wealthy in high- profile cases

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has dismissed allegations that the city government gives preferential treatment to cases involving the wealthy over those concerning the poor.

Archival issued the statement following criticisms over the attention city officials gave to the hit-and-run case that claimed the life of young entrepreneur Kingston Ralph Cheng. The incident prompted several city officials to release public statements on policy and to call for justice.

The strong response from public officials has drawn comparisons with the city’s handling of the Binaliw landfill tragedy, which claimed the lives of 36 workers. Despite the scale of the disaster, some critics argue that the landfill investigation did not receive the same level of urgency and visibility.
