Notice to govt on Wangchuk's NSA detention

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Union government on a habeas corpus petition filed by activist Sonam Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali Angmo, challenging his detention under the NSA after the violence during Ladakh statehood agitation on September 24 claimed four lives.

A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria sought the Centre's response and listed the matter for further hearing on October 14.

The plea, filed under Article 32, seeks Wangchuk's immediate release and challenges the legality of his detention, alleging that it violates his constitutional rights, LiveLaw and Bar & Bench reported.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Angmo, said the detention was illegal and that the grounds of detention had not been provided to the family. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, opposed the petition and maintained that the grounds of detention had already been supplied to Wangchuk.
