US President Donald Trump on Wednesday heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him the “nicest-looking guy” while describing him as a “father” but also a “killer” and “tough as hell”.

Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEOs Luncheon in Gyeongju, South Korea, Trump also hinted at an imminent trade deal with India and reiterated his claim of mediating between India and Pakistan to avert a nuclear conflict earlier this year.

Trump said his personal intervention helped deescalate tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, claiming that seven planes were shot down during the conflict.

He linked the de-escalation to ongoing trade talks between Washington and New Delhi.

"I'm doing a trade deal with India, and I have great respect and love for Prime Minister Modi. We have a great relationship.
