Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has emerged asa “historic reform’ that eased burdens on both families and businesses.

“A shirt costing Rs 1,000 was taxed at Rs 117 before 2014. Today, it attracts just Rs 35,” he noted, adding that most essential goods now carry only 5 per cent tax, directly benefiting farmers, labourers, and consumers
