Building India's RE capacity
The Free Press Journal - Indore
|December 13, 2025
India's renewable energy (RE) sector is witnessing an extraordinary transformation, driven by strong policy support, private investment, and global climate commitments.
-
From solar and wind to emerging sectors like green hydrogen, the country is steadily moving towards its goal of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. Yet, challenges in storage, land, and transmission continue to test the pace of progress.Solar
Among renewable sources, solar energy remains India's strongest growth engine. Both rooftop and ground-mounted projects are expanding rapidly, supported by tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) models that attract private participation. Under TBCB, investors develop and operate projects while the government guarantees returns, creating a strong incentive for global and domestic players to invest. India's installed solar capacity crossed 82 GW in 2025, but rooftop solar still accounts for less than 15% of that figure, showing vast untapped potential for industries and MSMEs.
Storage
While generation capacity is growing, energy storage continues to lag. Solar power peaks during the day, but balancing demand at night remains a challenge. Battery technology, though improving, is still costly. India's National Energy Storage Mission, announced in 2024, aims to build 100 GWh of battery storage by 2030, but adoption will depend on affordability and scale.
