Film body shake-up: Politics clouds cultural autonomy

The appointment of Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty as chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy has stirred a controversy after the actor and interim chairperson Prem Kumar was replaced without prior notification.
The reshuffle coincides with the approach of the International Film Festival of Kerala and comes amid speculation over political motives behind the move.
Prem Kumar said he learnt of his removal through media reports and described the decision as “the government's prerogative”.
He stated he was satisfied with his tenure but conveyed regret at not being invited to the handover event. It is believed that the move has been prompted by Prem Kumar's alleged support to the ASHA workers strike. According to Prem Kumar, however, he is not aware of any ulterior motive and he never supported the strike.
